What is the history of the Austin MLS?

Multiple Listing Services developed in the early 1900’s as a means to share exclusive listings* amongst other real estate professionals. The Austin Board of REALTORS® initiated the Austin MLS in 1952. At its inception, the Austin MLS was a paper based tool. Brokerages would maintain paper forms for every listing and deliver them to a central location weekly for distribution to other participating brokerages. Along with advertising their listings to other real estate professionals, the process helped the Board collect data that its members could use to help their clients price properties for sale or negotiate the price of a purchase.

With the advent of technology, maintaining and disseminating MLS data has gotten much easier. The ACTRIS MLxchange system (formally TEMPO) allows ACTRIS participants to access MLS data from a web browser. Additionally, consumers can access a limited amount of MLS data (not the actual MLS System - see "Can I search the Austin MLS Online?") through web sites that show specific listing information that sellers and agents have agreed to display on publicly accessible web sites.
